News and views - April 2022
The World Rafting Championships 2022 are nearly here!
In a months time we will be announcing the new World Champions already! Will the Czechs be able to defend their Open Men's, Open Women's and U23 Men's titles? Who will be our new Champions?!
In April we continued with introductions to our Board of Directors, first with Ales Danek, who is the Chair of the Athlete's Commission. And we remind you all that we are still looking forcandidates for the 2022 Athletes’ Commission. And then later we introduce you to Goran Lolic, well known as a Judge, time keeper and scorer at many WRC events, and a key part of this years WRC 2022 host organisation.
We present you with the 2022 Euro Cup Series schedule and encourage you to attend some of these events, with the first being held from 21 to 22 May, on the Cunovo artificial course, Bratislava, Slovakia.
Our thoughts continue to be with Ukraine in this awful time of unprovoked war.
We encourage you to support Ukraine any way you can and present to you some options.
Stay safe and keep paddling.

USA U19 Women heading to World Champs
30 Apr 2022 05:22 PM
The upcoming World Rafting Championships (WRC) which start on the 25 May, will see the California Poppies as the USA U19 Women’s team.
Teams from all over the world come to compete at the WRC, and while they may not understand each others’ languages, they all understand one common language – that of the river. Barriers drop away, friendships are made, competition is enjoyed, skills are learned, new rivers are enjoyed.
“You don’t speak the same language and now all of a sudden you do,” said head coach Sue Norman of the California Poppies.
At last WRC 2022 is nearly here! Are you ready to raft the Vrbas and Tara? The long wait to travel and go rafting, to meet up with friends, new and old, to compete and have a good time, is soon to be over! It is hard to believe it has been three years since our last WRC. We hope you are looking forward to it as much as we are! Below are a few reminders to make your championship memorable for all the right reasons!
Goran Lolic was voted as Chair of the Judges Committee and therefore was appointed to the BOD for the first time at the last Congress in 2021. He has been involved in a number of IRF committees for many years before this, namely the Judges Committee, the Sport & Competition Committee, and the Euro Race Committee. He has often been Head Judge at Euro or World Championships. Goran is heavily involved in the management of this year’s World Rafting Championship in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The IRF’s Rafting Operator Accreditation (ROA) was recently launched with the issuing of its first accreditation to Cardiff International White Water (CIWW). CIWW is home to the UK’s very first on-demand Olympic standard White Water Rafting and Indoor Wave facility. Their 250m white water course is designed for rafts, canoes and kayaks. Besides offering white water and flat water fun for all, CIWW is also an accredited professional training provider offering a range of internationally recognised courses.
The IRF’s first Euro Cup 2022 series event will be held from 21 to 22 May, on the Cunovo artificial course, Divoka voda area Bratislava, Slovakia. It will be R4, and the disciplines will be Sprint and Slalom. The difficulty level of whitewater is 3/4. This event is also the first round in the Slovak Rafting Championship. Full information about EC Cunovo 2022.
Usually the first event would have been the Dracula Race in Romania, but that was cancelled due to the effects of the Russian invasion into Ukraine.
Aleš Danek has been Chair of the Athletes’ Commission for a lot longer than expected! Usually elections for the Athlete’s Commission are held annually at each World Rafting Championship (WRC). However, with the pandemic preventing our WRC from happening over the past two years Aleš has had an extended time as Chair.
We spoke to Aleš to find out more.
Can you give us a short history of your rafting experience?
