We recently shared with you historic news about the IRF being invited to attend a conference with AIMS (the Alliance of Independent recognised Members of Sport). We now share with you why this invitation was so important.

AIMS is the group representing all non-IOC recognised members of GAISF. The International Rafting Federation (IRF) was granted Observer Status of GAISF in October 2019.

History:

Founded in 2009, AIMS it is the fourth group within GAISF. The other groups are the Association of IOC Recognised International Sport Federations (ARISF), the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) and the Association of Winter Olympic International Federations (AIOWF).

A Memorandum of Understanding between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and AIMS was signed on 19 April 2016. Through this recognition, the IOC acknowledges the role of AIMS and its valuable contribution to support the Olympic Movement.

Objectives:

Core objectives are to strengthen each individual sport, combine expertise, share knowledge and maintain close cooperation with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In doing so, individual sports can achieve official recognition from the IOC. Five member federations in recent years have achieved this goal. These are the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation, World Flying Disk Federation, International Federation of American Football, International Cheer Union and the International Federation of Muaythai Amateur. Other member federations hope to be recognised in the near future.

AIMS works very closely with the three IOC recognised federations (ARISF, ASOIF, AIOWF) and also IOC recognised games such as World Games, Universiade, TAFISA, Commonwealth Games.

Exchange of culture, education, and sport for all is an important platform. Along with it is protecting each other from splinter groups, cooperation with WADA and using sport as a powerful tool to contribute to society. AIMS further works in close cooperation with Peace and Sport, Generations for Peace and UN Women. AIMS is also an important partner of SportAccord convention with their Annual General Assembly is held during each year’s convention.

The future:

AIMS has a vast global network of sporting federations and organisations. For example, President Stephan Fox is General Secretary of IFMA (International Federation of Muaythai Associations). And the organisation itself has 21 international federation members.

On a grassroots level, development is key. When AIMS arrange a conference, it always includes a 1 day workshop to introduce sports. These sports are not usually as widely known. As a result, those sports end up with greater public appeal.

AIMS continues to work closely with the IOC to promote sporting activities and to provide support to athletes and sporting bodies. Therefore, the IRF is honoured to be invited to the AIMS video conference. We also appreciate AIMS’s offer of assistance to help us to achieve our goals. As a result, the future is brighter for rafting.
